A year and a half ago, I bought Clutch’s Blast Tyrant album on CD. Immediately, something seemed…off. I am still new to the audio nerd scene, and was newer then, and I could not place the weirdness.
Later, I read a couple articles in Guitar World about recording music – especially hard rock and metal – and the author discussed mixing and mastering. Also, in reading up on the loudness wars, I became more and more attuned to the concept of over-compression. As I listened to Blast Tyrant more, it seemed ...

American alternative rock band R.E.M. was formed in 1980. Since then, it has gone on to reach a popularity level that challenges the word “alternative”, especially after they made the albums Out of Time (1991) and Automatic for the People (1992).
With only the departure of one member, the band has managed to preserve its original line-up over 3 decades. Given that REM released their 15th studio album this year, it is time we wrote a tribute for this band. Below are 15 R.E.M facts. Enjoy!

Songs that feature a person’s name can sometimes take on a special meaning when you can relate to both the name and a situation with that person that reminds you of the song. In some cases, it’s almost as if the song was custom written for you. I would share my personal favorites but that would be sharing too much. Instead I’ll leave you with these:

Psychedelic rock is one of the better known rock sub-genres. This genre’s popularity rose in the 60s and 70s, where many rock musicians and band members were experimenting with different types of drugs, and using their “high” state of minds to write songs. The genre gets its name from the meaning of the word psychedelic, which means soul-manifesting. The term was coined in 1957, in order to name the effects of LSD (which is the short for lysergic acid diethylamide).
While many bands were users, not all of them contributed to ...

Not all rock stars want to change the world. Some just want to have fun. But some, like Jon Bon Jovi, decide to make a little difference after they grow up.
After all, when Jon was a little boy, all he wanted to was to play the guitar and pick up chicks. He wasn’t interested in anything else other than girls and music. This got to a point that his high school teachers let him pass with the condition that he’d just keep up his mouth shut.

Years later, this strictly rock ...

The 80s are identified with all things excessive, especially when it comes to fashion and music. Glam rock/metal bands ruled the era, though some bands reacted to the exaggerated style and ended up creating new sub-genres. Two such genres are thrash (a form of metal) and grunge.

The Grunge Genre and 3 Most Famous Grunge Bands: Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden
Grunge was born as a sub-genre of (alternative) rock music in the mid-80s, most particularly in Seattle, USA. While the songs of glam rock concentrated on love, sex, parties, drugs, rock ...

Several years ago, before Starbucks became as common place as McDonalds, a friend introduced me to the idea. We visited his favorite hang-out, a place surrounded by your usual strip mall inhabitants; however, this coffehouse was a little different. It was filled with artists, musicians, and furniture not unlike that which you may find at a friend’s house. The whole atmosphere felt like you were visiting a friend’s home with the added ...

“I Dreamt I Was A Rockstar” [self-released] is the second release from Dayton, Ohio native Tonye Christopher, whose influences range from Justin Timberlake to Kanye West to John Mayer [whose fellow sensitive singer-songwriter Josh Kelley sings Christopher’s praises on his web site]. It follows on from his 2008 debut “The Puppy Love Letters”, expanding upon that album’s mellow acoustic guitar-led pop-rock to include R&B beats, synths, vocal effects and squealing electric guitars.
It’s not a mix you encounter every day. Christopher’s voice is reminiscent of Mayer’s [he has also released a ...
