Mystery solved. 16-year-old Nicholas Harrington takes credit for the grand piano that showed up on a sandbar in Miami’s Biscayne Bay. The stunt is somehow meant to beef up his resume to get into Manhattan’s Cooper Union college. The piano was set on fire twice, once by partygoers as part of a New Year’s Eve prank, and once again as it was set on the sandbar.

Read more about it here.

The matter is worsen by the apparent back and forth in how stuff is supposed to work. Remember the ether?

Most people are aware of the word Photon to mean a discrete particle of light. You should then be able to guess that a Phonon, similarly, is a quantum of sound (whatever that means). The cool ...

Old houses tend to be uniformly creepy, with their unique swishes, groans and clangs. A decade’s old collection of withered girders in an abandoned factory, or the wind swishing through abandoned hallways can create acoustics which make your hair stand on end, praying that whatever it is in there, it won’t be following you. But the dynamics of sound in these large buildings can be manipulated a little creatively, to unleash some marvelous creations of sound and melody.

In the last week or so, music blogs – at least those that weren’t deleted by Google for posting copyrighted content – have exploded over “zef”, an energetic hybrid of rave and hip-hip with a self-consciously white-trash aesthetic [the word itself refers to the South African redneck subculture] typified by bands such as Cape Town collective Die Antwoord.

The music of Die Antwoord, fronted by tattooed MC Ninja and diminutive blonde Yo-Landi Vi$$er and featuring giant DJ Hi-Tek and Progeria survivor Leon Bartha, fuses Ninja’s heavily-accented rhymes with bleepy electronic choruses ...

On December 4, 2009, a user going by the name “iamamiwhoami” uploaded a video to YouTube. The video featured images of trees with writhing limbs, a metallic-skinned woman in the foetal position in what appears to represent the womb, and – most disturbingly – a goat giving birth; its soundtrack was a haunting trip-hop piece, completely devoid of vocals and led by quivering high-pitched synths. Links to the 55-second clip, titled “Prelude 699130082.451322”, were sent to various music blogs and the video quickly went viral, with over 122,000 views to ...

Portland, Oregon, fall 2008. Club Satyricon, the revered punk venue which throughout its lengthy history has played host to some of the greatest alternative, punk and metal acts of the 80s and 90s, is currently getting down to a hybrid of hip-hop, electronica and inhuman screaming courtesy of BrokeNCYDE, four neon-clad young men whose excess of hair product is melting under the stage lights.
The Great Rock & Roll Swindle, Part 2 – Is BroNCYDE for real?

As Johnny Rotten said in 1978, at the end of the final Sex Pistols concert before the untimely death of bandmate Sid Vicious, ‘Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?’
This article has nothing to do with the Pistols, except that its title was borrowed from their 1980 film and it relates to an artist whose music and image, like theirs, were carefully manufactured despite giving every appearance to the contrary. Up until December 2009, Michigan’s Andrew Wilkes-Krier [aka Andrew WK] was best known for the iconic cover of his ...

Shimon digs it.
So now, robots can do something mere mortals can’t…………improvise. Shimon the Jazz playing robot, can listen and improvise to any musician, not in any spectacularly impressive manner, but it can capture the tone structure, a basic idea of the artists composition, and work on it from there.
To get started, Shimon was programmed to master the technique of Thelonius Monk, the guy who invented Bebop and improvisational jazz. It’s within this model that Shimon works, and actually accompanied a pianist, Guy ...
