The Durutti Column are an english post-punk band that got their start in 1978 under the Factory Records umbrella. Although they have gone through many lineup changes, they are still together today.
In 1980 they released an album called "The Return of the Durutti Colum" and decided to do something special with the record jacket. The sleeve for this record is covered in sandpaper. Why, you ask? Well, it’s so when the record is stored on a shelf next to other records, the very action of taking the record off the ...

It’s amazing how times change. What would be considered absolutely unacceptable 40 years ago is the norm now. Sometimes I wonder what people will find completely acceptable 40 years from now. Yikes!
In any case, just for fun, here are 30 or so music album covers that were either banned, changed to appease an overly prudish public, or sanitized to keep a retailer happy. Enjoy!

Grace Jones is not really at the top of my music list, however I could never say that she wasn’t creative, especially on the visual front. Her new Album “Hurricane” has some sort-of interesting artwork on the cover, but it’s inside the sleeve that you see the magic.

Wikipedia users are now again able to view the cover of the 1976 album, ‘Virgin Killer’, by The Scorpions.
Access to the Wikipedia page was blocked after worries that the cover, featuring a naked girl would be illegal. Approximately 95% of people in Britan were unable to access the page because internet providers agreed to enforce a ban of the page by blocking access to it.
The Internet Watch Foundation lifted the restrictions after taking into account “the length of time the image has existed and its wide availability”.
