One of the most savvy lines from The Runaways movie starring Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, and Michael Shannon sums up publicity in the music business: “It’s press, not prestige. Get used to it.” This was a reference from Kim Fowley to Cherie Currie as she was upset at a magazine interview that was anything but flattering.
John Mayer and Katy Perry recently made entries into the old adage. John Mayer quit using Twitter as he could not handle the criticism from followers. Better yet, Katy Perry shows off what a ...

Very basically put, coffeehouses or coffee places are cafés that enable social interaction and a comfortable working environment. Several years ago, before Starbucks became as common place as McDonalds, a friend introduced me to the idea. We visited his favorite hang-out, a place surrounded by your usual strip mall inhabitants; however, this coffehouse was a little different. It was filled with artists, musicians, and furniture not unlike that which you may find at a friend’s house. The whole atmosphere felt like you were visiting a friend’s home with the added ...

Portland, Oregon, fall 2008. Club Satyricon, the revered punk venue which throughout its lengthy history has played host to some of the greatest alternative, punk and metal acts of the 80s and 90s, is currently getting down to a hybrid of hip-hop, electronica and inhuman screaming courtesy of BrokeNCYDE, four neon-clad young men whose excess of hair product is melting under the stage lights.
The Great Rock & Roll Swindle, Part 2 – Is BroNCYDE for real?

“Love Is Proximity” [Sweet Goodness] is the latest release by Essex Chanel [pronounced Cha-NELL], the most recent project for Chicago multi-hyphenate Travis Lee Wiggins, formerly of bands such as The Salts, Dolphins Swimming and The Personal FX, and whose non-musical activities range from conceptual art to his newly-formed Sweet Goodness record label and management company.

Like his fellow Midwestern indie-folk auteur Sufjan Stevens, Wiggins writes and plays numerous instruments on Essex Chanel’s prodigious recorded output [this is the project’s eighth album since 2005]; he also arranges and produces it. In January ...

So, a few days ago, I think I mentioned the difficulty I experienced compiling my 20 Best Singles of 2009 list. I would like to formally retract that complaint; the 2009 list was a walk in the park compared to the task of identifying 20 of my favourite singles of the entire decade.
But I wanted to do it, so I persevered; same release rules as the 2009 list [which meant I couldn’t include, for example, The National’s “Murder Me Rachael” or The Radio Dept’s “I Don’t Like It Like This”, ...

The 757s are a four-piece from Minneapolis, MN, who have played alongside Grant Hart and whose members have served time in such late-80s/early-90s Twin Cities outfits as Bellwether, Tangletown, Mosquito Ranch and Hart’s post-Husker Du melodic rockers Nova Mob. All of which made me [a rabid fan of Husker Du and the indefinable but undeniable Minneapolis “feel” exhibited by those gentlemen and contemporaries such as the Replacements and Soul Asylum] very excited to review their sophomore album, “Freeway Surrender” [Automatic].
It doesn’t disappoint. “Freeway Surrender” is a 32-minute, 16-second blast of ...

Jon and Tracy Morter are “fed up with the possibility of ANOTHER X-Factor Christmas No.1”, and they plan to do something about it! Namely, spearheading a viral marketing campaign to replace this year’s winner of the British talent show with – what else – “Killing In The Name” by Rage Against the Machine.

Can a commercial make you buy a car? Maybe not, but it will make you notice! The new commercial for the Lincoln MKZ is very well put together with excellent visuals and a song to match. The girl singing this catchy song is part of the band The Shiny Toy Guns. This song is a cover of Peter Schilling’s 1980′s “Major Tom” which was a retelling of David Bowie’s 1969 “Space Oddity.”
The single “Major Tom” was released in May 5, 2009 and has been on the Billboard Top 100 single ...

Rock band Tool may very well be the most complex and deep band in lyrical content with subject matter ranging from mathematics to psychoanalysis. It can be argued when you see a great painting whether the artist really meant to portray everything that the critic gives them credit for. Did Picasso really think about emphasis, line, movement, pattern, and tone when painting Guernica? Or did he simply rely upon a vision and gut feeling on what felt right? Here are two clips of the rock band Tool with some very ...

Every once in a while I read an interview with one of my favorite bands and they mention some albums they like. I’ll usually check them out and it’s amazing how many great bands I’ve found this way that I never would have been turned on to otherwise.
