Ever wondered what happened in the music history on a specific day? Well, below is a list of (some of the) things that happened. Many musicians (or their offspring) were born, many passed away and some events took place- from award ceremonies to chart successes. We covered the happenings from 1652 to 2006.
2006- Coldplay front man Chris Martin’s daughter Apple was born. The mother is the established actress/new singer Gwyneth Paltrow.
2005- Bluegrass singer Jimmy Martin passed away.
2004- American jazz singer/actress Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me became the number one ...

The same beat thrashing against your mind, again and again and again ad infinitum, ad nauseum. You would be lucky that catchy song went away for a while, a day maybe, two whole blissful weeks! Smug with relief, you turn on the radio and Here it goes, Here It Goes, HERE IT GOES AGAIN…….AW HELL HERE IT GOES AGAIN, SHOULD HAVE KNOWN………….

In the last week or so, music blogs – at least those that weren’t deleted by Google for posting copyrighted content – have exploded over “zef”, an energetic hybrid of rave and hip-hip with a self-consciously white-trash aesthetic [the word itself refers to the South African redneck subculture] typified by bands such as Cape Town collective Die Antwoord.

The music of Die Antwoord, fronted by tattooed MC Ninja and diminutive blonde Yo-Landi Vi$$er and featuring giant DJ Hi-Tek and Progeria survivor Leon Bartha, fuses Ninja’s heavily-accented rhymes with bleepy electronic choruses ...

From 2Pac to Carly Simon, the annals of popular music are filled with songs targeting other musicians, exes, record companies and anyone else who fails to share the songwriter’s point of view. Here are ten of the best.

10. Justin Timberlake – “Cry Me A River” [2002]
[Subject: Britney Spears]
With sole writing credits for the second single his mega-successful “Justified” album, “Cry Me A River” proved that the former *NSYNC pretty boy could do thinly-veiled contempt as well as any more “serious” musician. The song, written about ex-girlfriend Britney Spears’ infidelity during ...

In honour of Monday’s Grammy Awards, here’s a list of ten of the most memorable Grammy moments in recent years. For the most established awards night in popular music, the Grammys are pretty light on shock value compared to, say, the VMAs [the younger, flashier Prince Harry to the Grammys’ sedate Prince William], but – as seen below – they’ve still had their share of legendary performances. And a couple of equally legendary stage invasions…

On December 4, 2009, a user going by the name “iamamiwhoami” uploaded a video to YouTube. The video featured images of trees with writhing limbs, a metallic-skinned woman in the foetal position in what appears to represent the womb, and – most disturbingly – a goat giving birth; its soundtrack was a haunting trip-hop piece, completely devoid of vocals and led by quivering high-pitched synths. Links to the 55-second clip, titled “Prelude 699130082.451322”, were sent to various music blogs and the video quickly went viral, with over 122,000 views to ...

In honour of awards season, here is a list of my favourite soundtracks of the last decade. Eight of these are from films, but two are mixes from two of the decade’s biggest television shows; no matter what you might think of the shows themselves, both were responsible for introducing several previously unknown artists to a massive and appreciative audience, and the resulting soundtrack albums were sufficiently relevant and beloved to earn them a place on this list.

10. “The Boat That Rocked” [2009]

The soundtrack to Richard Curtis’ 1960s pirate radio ...

27-year-old Marcie is what’s known as a multi-hyphenate: singer-songwriter, dancer, guest vocalist on numerous dance tracks, and host of “Behind The Lyric”, a digital radio program in which she interviews prominent members of the dance music world about – what else – the meanings behind their lyrics.
While the songs on which the Boston resident appears have been released as singles and featured on compilations such as Ministry of Sound’s Gatecrasher series, she hasn’t yet released an album under her own name, preferring to collaborate with a wide range of DJs ...

“I Dreamt I Was A Rockstar” [self-released] is the second release from Dayton, Ohio native Tonye Christopher, whose influences range from Justin Timberlake to Kanye West to John Mayer [whose fellow sensitive singer-songwriter Josh Kelley sings Christopher’s praises on his web site]. It follows on from his 2008 debut “The Puppy Love Letters”, expanding upon that album’s mellow acoustic guitar-led pop-rock to include R&B beats, synths, vocal effects and squealing electric guitars.
It’s not a mix you encounter every day. Christopher’s voice is reminiscent of Mayer’s [he has also released a ...

So, a few days ago, I think I mentioned the difficulty I experienced compiling my 20 Best Singles of 2009 list. I would like to formally retract that complaint; the 2009 list was a walk in the park compared to the task of identifying 20 of my favourite singles of the entire decade.
But I wanted to do it, so I persevered; same release rules as the 2009 list [which meant I couldn’t include, for example, The National’s “Murder Me Rachael” or The Radio Dept’s “I Don’t Like It Like This”, ...
