This post is dedicated to different songs with the same title from different artists (each belonging to different genres and countries). Both songs come from successful albums, and they are both called Nothing Else Matters.
Garou — Nothing Else Matters
“Nothing Else Matters” is from the French Canadian pop rock artist Garou’s (birth name is Pierre Garand) first, and currently the only, studio album in English. The album is called Piece of My Soul, and it is best known for the catchy and fast single “Stand Up” (which got a lot of airplay). “Stand Up” was written by Matchbox 20 singer Rob Thomas and its video was played quite frequently on MTV when it first came out in 2008. Plus, “Stand Up” isn’t the only song with a familiar contributor. The track Coming Home was co-written by musician/song writer Aldo Nova, who also collaborates often with Jon Bon Jovi.
“Piece of My Soul” reached number 2 in Canada, 3 in Belgium and France, 7 in Poland and 8 in Switzerland.
Written by Dimitri Ehrlich and Andy Marvel, “Nothing Else Matters” is a romantic song, talking about how important it is too appreciate the good moments while you are living them, and letting your significant other know how much he/she means to you.
Sample Song Lyrics:
A sudden disaster could roll from sea
The earth could just open forget you and me
Life is what happens while we’re making plans
You gave me your heart but it slipped through my handsDid i ever stop to say ?
Did i ever find a way ?
To catch you when time flew
Did i ever make it show ?
Did i ever let you know ?
Nothing else matters but you
Metallica — Nothing Else Matters
The much better known song of the two is Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters”, which is a hit with rock and metal fans alike. The song is featured on the album Metallica, the band’s 5th studio album released in 1991. The album is Metallica’s biggest selling record, and also the source of the hits “Enter Sandman”, “Wherever I May Roam”, “The Unforgiven” and “Sad But True”.
The album was a number one in the UK, US and Australia. It is estimated that the album sales surpassed 15,000,000 copies in the US alone.
“Nothing Else Matters” was written by singer/guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, the creator duo of many of the band’s songs. The song’s top 10 positions were a number 3 in Norway (a country known for its fondness for heavy metal), 4 in the Netherlands, 5 in Switzerland, 6 in the UK, 8 in Australia and 10 in France. The song saw top 20 on the charts in Sweden (number 12) and Finland (14), and number 11 in the US mainstream rock charts.
The song video features the band in a song-writing/recording session, as well as goofing and playing around. In one scene, drummer Lars Ulrich is shown playing darts using the poster of Tico Torres as the dartboard. Torres is the drummer of the “softer” band Bon Jovi.
Despite the genre difference between Garou and Metallica, Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” was also written about the connection between a guy and a girl (who happened to be James’ girlfriend at the time).
Sample Song Lyrics:
So close no matter how far
Couldn’t be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else mattersNever opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don’t just say
And nothing else mattersTrust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters
