Active Listening for Intelligence

There are different ways to listen to music, actively or passively. If I listen to a Beethoven symphony section while driving in my car thinking about what I have to do for the day not really focusing on the music, that is passively listening. If i take the time to sit in a quiet room with good headphones thinking about nothing else but the music I am about to listen to, that is a form of active listening.

Music vs intelligence:  Can music make you dumb?

Here’s something that is sure to get the hairs up on some peoples’ backs. Virgil Griffith, the creator of WikiScanner and a grad student from CalTech did some research which studied the relationship between musical styles and bands and the SAT scores of the people who listened to them. He found that the smartest students listened to Beethoven (average SAT of 1371) and the students who rung in at the bottom of the SAT scores listened to Lil’ Wayne (average SAT of 889).
