Great Rock & Roll Swindle – Is BrokeNCYDE for real?

Posted by heather in January 9th 2010

Portland, Oregon, fall 2008. Club Satyricon, the revered punk venue which throughout its lengthy history has played host to some of the greatest alternative, punk and metal acts of the 80s and 90s, is currently getting down to a hybrid of hip-hop, electronica and inhuman screaming courtesy of BrokeNCYDE, four neon-clad young men whose excess [...]

The Evolution of Travis Lee Wiggins

Posted by heather in December 23rd 2009

“Love Is Proximity” [Sweet Goodness] is the latest release by Essex Chanel [pronounced Cha-NELL], the most recent project for Chicago multi-hyphenate Travis Lee Wiggins, formerly of bands such as The Salts, Dolphins Swimming and The Personal FX, and whose non-musical activities range from conceptual art to his newly-formed Sweet Goodness record label and management company.

20 Best Music Singles of Decade

Posted by heather in December 22nd 2009

So, a few days ago, I think I mentioned the difficulty I experienced compiling my 20 Best Singles of 2009 list. I would like to formally retract that complaint; the 2009 list was a walk in the park compared to the task of identifying 20 of my favourite singles of the entire decade.

I Like Your Teenage Logic – The 757s Freeway Surrender

Posted by heather in December 17th 2009

The 757s are a four-piece from Minneapolis, MN, who have played alongside Grant Hart and whose members have served time in such late-80s/early-90s Twin Cities outfits as Bellwether, Tangletown, Mosquito Ranch and Hart’s post-Husker Du melodic rockers Nova Mob. All of which made me [a rabid fan of Husker Du and the indefinable but undeniable [...]

I Won’t Do What You Tell Me

Posted by heather in December 16th 2009

Here is the group that started it all. Or, rather, a rebooted version of the group that started it all, after the mysterious disappearance of the original. Jon and Tracy Morter are “fed up with the possibility of ANOTHER X-Factor Christmas No.1”, and they plan to do something about it! Namely, spearheading a viral marketing [...]

Posted by NA Admin in June 22nd 2009

Can a commercial make you buy a car? Maybe not, but it will make you notice! The new commercial for the Lincoln MKZ is very well put together with excellent visuals and a song to match. The girl singing this catchy song  is part of the band The Shiny Toy Guns. This song is a [...]

Music about Mathematics and Psychoanalysis

Posted by NA Admin in June 10th 2009

Rock band Tool may very well be the most complex and deep band in lyrical content with subject matter ranging from mathematics to psychoanalysis. It can be argued when you see a great painting whether the artist really meant to portray everything that the critic gives them credit for. Did Picasso really think about emphasis, [...]

What the bands you listen to…listen to.

Posted by NA Admin in March 4th 2009

I always like to wonder about what my favorite musicians listen to. It helps me discover new music and it’s also fun to find out what music inspires the musicians that have inspired me. Every once in a while I read an interview with one of my favorite bands and they mention some albums they [...]
