Did you know that The Cult had a song called “Nirvana”? You probably heard Alice Cooper’s “Poison” at one time or another, as it is one of the 80s catchiest rock songs. But then we are pretty familiar with the grunge band Nirvana as well as the glam rock band Poison.
And while The Cult’s “Nirvana” isn’t about the band Nirvana and Alice Cooper’s “Poison” has got nothing to do with the band Poison, it is fun that their rock song names are also band names, which happen to be in the business of rock music.
Songs That Are Also Band Names feat. The Cult’s Nirvana & Alice Cooper’s Poison
The Cult — Nirvana
English rock band The Cult was formed in 1983. Until their split in 1995, the band released 6 albums. “Nirvana” is featured on the band’s second album Love (released in 1985). The band reunited in 1999, even though there was again a brief uncertainty about the band’s future in 2002, the band reunited again in 2005 and have been together since. The band released its latest album Born into This in 2007.
“Nirvana” is the first track on Love, an album which sold 2.5 million copies. The nirvana mentioned in the song is good and loud music. The song was written by The Cult members, Ian Astbury (lead singer), and Billy Duffy (guitars). This duo wrote all the tracks on the album.
Sample Song Lyrics:
I float through day and night life, well most of the time
Till I hung up my blues on a nail in your wall
It rained flowers when the music began
Love all around when the music is loudEvery day, nirvana
Always this way, yeah, yeah, yeah
I wish that every day, nirvana
Always this way
Alice Cooper – Poison
Singer Alice Cooper is best known for his song “Poison”, featured Cooper’s 11th solo album Thrash, released in 1989. “Thrash”, as a record, is one of Cooper’s biggest hits, and his probably his most glam rock record as well. It reached number 20 on The Billboard 200, and number 2 in the UK. Its other impressive chart positions include number 4 in Austria and Norway, 5 in Australia, 6 in Sweden and 10 in Switzerland.
The success and the glam rock — heaviness of the album doesn’t come as a surprise as it was produced by Desmond Child and some of the songs were co-written by rockers Joan Jett, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora.
“Poison” is about as fun as glam rock can get. The video features Alice Cooper and his dream (poison) girl in a lot of leather. Poison was a top 10 hit in many countries, including US, UK, Ireland, Australia and Germany. The song is also featured in the video games Rock Band and Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.

Sample Song Lyrics:
Your cruel device
Your blood like ice
One look could kill
My pain, your thrill
I want to love you, but I better not touch (Don’t touch)
I want to hold you but my senses tell me to stop
I want to kiss you but I want it too much (Too much)
I want to taste you but your lips are venomous poison
You’re poison runnin’ thru my veins
You’re poison, I don’t want to break these chains
