Music & psychology colliding

Posted on December 17th 2008

I know that I have pretty eclectic tastes in music - none of my friends really like all the same stuff that I like.

Well, a company in New York called Signal Patterns has just launched some pretty cool software that analyzes your personality and music tastes using professional criteria to help you find out more about yourself and also helps you connect with others like you.

The Signal Patterns software offers people insight on how psychological traits influence their behavior, emotions and content choices.  It can then create personalized playlists based on a person’s “music personality”.

“Our technology and Web applications are based on decades of psychology research and studies from our team of industry-leading scientists,” explained Ran Zilca, CEO and co-founder of Signal Patterns. “We take the science behind our technology and wrap it into friendly social Web applications that are designed to be simple, viral and fun for people, but at the same time offer real value to enhance their lives.”

The software performs 2 different tests - one is a psychological test made up of 40 questions, the other is a test that asks users to rate various clips of music.  It is then able to get a read on your “music personality” at a deeper level that just genre and artist choices. It can tell you more about yourself based on your music choices and also connect you to others who share the same traits.

There are also bunch of cool apps for Facebook and other social networks.

Check out their website and take the tests.  The more people who take the tests the better the results.

thanks for this post…as a musician and psychologist, its awesome that people are studying the link between the personality and what makes certain people listen to certain things. i know i’ve always been curious about that and definitely have my theories!

Be Warned!
I like the idea but I felt betrayed by the website. After spending all that time taking the survey it “forces” you to sign up to see your results. A sneaky trap, it should have disclosed from the beginning. I react poorly to being trapped like that and closed the window :P
