We got a lot of positive feedback on our Can You Hear Like a Teenager? article, and it inspired us to take it just a little bit further.
Check your hearing with a list of tones that go from 8Hz all the way up to 22,000Hz. It’s fairly common for people who are over 25 years of age to not be able to hear above 15kHz and also experience some level of hearing loss or hearing damage such as tinnitus. This online test will help you find out where your high frequency hearing cuts off.
Musicians have a much higher risk of hearing loss that most people do, and many of us don’t really wear proper hearing protection. Even just listening to an iPod for an extended period of time can permanently damage your hearing. We also gradually lose our high-frequency hearing as we age.
Take our online hearing test: listen to each of these tones and let us know where your hearing cuts out. Make sure to turn the volume down on your headphones or speakers and gradually turn them up to a safe level.

Importance of Hearing Protection
If you’re around loud music a lot like I am, or if you are experiencing some hearing loss, I highly recommend getting a pair of hearing protection earplugs.
The Etymotic earlplugs don’t muffle the sound like conventional earplugs – they basically give you the same frequency response as without, but with a bit lower volume. If I wear them out to a club, they also help me carry on a conversation without yelling. Etymotic earbuds are also great in that they isolate your ear so you don’t have to turn up the volume as much on your MP3 player (ambient noise is one of the biggest reasons we turn up the volume). I love mine.
Age 38.5 and I top out at 14. Never listened to loud music but I’ve had several bad ear infections.
for some of you; dont sell yourselves too short. Some headphones are tweaked differently. I couldnt hear past 15k on my UE triple.fi 10’s, but it was very easy to detect up to 19k with my sennheiser HD595’s. I’m 25.5 btw
34 years old
too much metal ^^
can’t hear 16kHZ
Eesh, this test is hard to take with tinnitus that, going by these numbers, runs at a constant 9kHz in both ears (the tinnitus is only slightly higher in pitch than 8kHz, and I can’t hear 10kHz).
But then, I’m also a flutist, so maybe that did me in. I’ve always been pretty deaf.
I’m 16, and can hear 22 clearly. Its a D#.
47, was able to hear 22 kHz without any problems. So could some of my mates, while some others couldn’t. The only difference between us seemes the be that the pot smoking ones can hear way more than the non-pot smokers. You guys think there might be causality?
i’m 11 almost 12 and the highest i can currently hear is 22 khs
20, 19hz.
I’m 16 and i can hear all of them
I’m 33.3 and I can hear 8kHz to 16kHz very well. 17kHz to 22kHz are perceptible, but only faintly.
im 16 and i could hear up to 21 and that was before i realized i can turn the volume all the way. when i did i could hear 22. ive always relied more on my hearing than on my sight because i am partially blind.
16, barely can hear 19kHz but that makes me headaaaaache! x-x
I could hear the sound right up to 22kHz but only just, 18kHz must be my breaking point in which my ears can’t really hear it too well
i’m 23 and i can clearly hear up to 19khz.
I can barely here 14 and I’m 13. Yeah, thats right, 13. And I’ve never even been to a concert.
I’m 20 and i can hear 22 kHz, but i had to turn my volume on max and put in head phones to do it
25.5, and at the highest volume on both my computer and the test controls, the highest I could hear was 17 kHz. I could barely perceive something at higher frequencies, but I’m not convinced that’s not my brain playing tricks on me.
I am 35 – the top I can hear is 16kHz
I’m 48 and can hear 15kHz
im 1 and can hearup to 20(: an my mum and brother whos 28 could only hear upto 14
I’m 31,
Upto 14kHz
Reason?
26, can hear up to 17kHz
I’m sixteen and I can hear up to 21 clearly, but 22 is non existent for me. Personally don’t like listening to loud music or anything but I’m exposed to really really loud music a ton.
I am 13 and i’cant hear 22 KHz
I’m 19 and I can hear up to 16kHz.
Can’t hear anything above 16khz, which happens to bee the upper limit on my headphones 😛
36 Female, 14 is my max. Never listened to loud music/TV/Walkman (Yes, Walkman) and have been to only a handful of concerts. Never had good ear for sounds/music though.
i m 14 n i cn hear 22 khz properly 🙂
I’m 21, a drummer and guitarist and I have been gigging since 14. I top out at 17kHz
I’m 18 and i still can hear 21 bearly
i’m 19, used to listen to music up load from age 8-14 i’m the guy that always asks you to repeat yourself because i can never make out what you’re saying if there’s any background noise…
i got up to 16KHz
I could hear up to 19 clearly, but up to 22 i could barley hear. I am 11 yrs old.
I’m almost 20 and I heard them all. And I’m a guitar player, so I’m sure my hearing will decrease greatly in the next few years.
26 and can’t hear anything beyond 15KHz.
I’m 26 and constantly listen to loud music in my ear and I hear them all. lol
At 44 and working 21 years as a sound engineer I’m more than aware that my hearing will not register anything above 14 KHz
So anyone who is 20 now, as much as you love high headphone volumes and/or clubbing – imagine the tools of your trade actually not being accurate so you actually equalize music wrongly not much sooner than double your age
I’m 21. I heard up to 17 very clearly. 18-22, I could faintly.
I’m 17 and could only hear up through 16kHz. Dangit D:
im 13 and i cant here the 15
im 16, and i cant hear 15 khz. i dont know for you, but i think its really depressing, i feel like im going to be deaf…
Hi,
I’d get my ears checked by your doc if that is the case. Might not be anything to worry about but probably best to find out now.
Cheers
I just turned 21 and the best I could do was 18 kHz
I could hear all of them except for 18, and 19. The rest I have no problem making out. Is that odd?
I’m 15 and i could only properly hear 19 kHZ ):
Wow – I’m 44… Couldn’t hear above 8…
Too much metal when I was young I guess, or could have been the farm equipment.
Dang –
I am 52 and can hear as high as 22 kHz at low volumes. I have dolphin ears.. sonar hearing. Somehow I have always known that and I am a sound engineer.. and have been told when working with musicians in the studio that I have golden ears.. I am grateful as I work with sound and frequency all the time. I have never abused my ears and never listened to extreme loud music. When I went to concerts I always wore ear plugs as I have been extra sensitive to sound.. especially loud sounds.
I’m 41 and I heard all but 22kHz.
Using a tone generator, I can hear up to 13580Hz in my right ear but only up to 12596Hz in my left :(. I’m 59 and I also have problems deciphering conversations when there’s even quite a low level of background noise :(.
I am 19 and could only hear up to 16, then again I go to a lot of concerts, drive with loud music, and pretty much always have my headphones in and turned way up, maybe I should give my ears a break! haha
I’m 33 and I could hear up to 19 (with headphones). But even if my hearing stopped at 13 I wouldn’t mind much since there is nothing beautiful to hear at those frequencies anyway.
hahaha!!!!!! youre right!!!
I am 32 and can hear all the way up to 19.
I’m 18 and I can hear until 20…
I’m 22. I can barely hear 17 and anything 18 and up I can’t hear at all. My dog is a bit pi**ed off though, maybe I can hear them if he wasn’t growling at my computer?
